What is Bamboo Fabric?

Bamboo fabric is made from the pulp of bamboo plants, which are processed into fibers through either mechanical or chemical methods. The most common method involves dissolving the bamboo in a non-toxic solvent to create a viscose-like material known as bamboo rayon. What makes bamboo fabric special is its natural softness, breathability, and moisture-wicking properties, making it comfortable to wear, especially for those with sensitive skin. It’s also durable and naturally resistant to odors, offering long-lasting wear. While bamboo is a fast-growing plant, it's important to note that the process of turning bamboo into fabric can still involve significant water and energy use, so it's best viewed as a sustainable option when produced responsibly. We source our bamboo brand new from a region in China where the bamboo is grown, processed and printed to reduce air miles. We currently buy very limited amounts of new bamboo fabric, around <20m per year. We purchase only the bare minimum that we can to match our deadstock Modal. 

What is Modal Fabric?

Modal is a type of rayon made from beech tree pulp. The wood is processed through a chemical process that transforms it into fibers, which are then woven into fabric. Known for its silky smooth texture, modal is incredibly soft, lightweight, and breathable, making it a popular choice for comfortable clothing. It’s also highly absorbent, so it helps keep you cool and dry. Modal fabric is durable, resists shrinking, and maintains its softness wash after wash.

While modal is a more sustainable alternative to conventional fabrics like cotton in some ways (due to the relatively low water and land usage of beech trees), the production process still involves chemicals. Because all of our Modal is received as deadstock we are unable to confirm where the fabric originated from or the practices used in production, please warm wash separately BEFORE wearing.
